My wife came home from work yesterday with this second-hand find: a Bodum cup à la Captain Picard.

I already have one of these (used for Earl Grey tea, of course) so this one’s for coffee.

One cannot have too many Star Trek drinking vessels.

No colour coordination, but I maintain that the vibe is coherent.

In news that will surprise nobody, I wrote in a cafe with a nice fountain pen on good paper and drank black coffee and had a lovely time.

I tried writing like this and it was as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced

Pen & stationery enthusiasts: I saw this, now you can too.

Yeah, you can even make it so you *can’t* post without adding alt text. It’s in the Accessibility section of settings.

There are some apocalyptic photos coming out of Victoria right now.

All good wishes to anyone affected by these fires. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-01...

I reckon some of you need to see Hobart’s Derwent River, rolling and frothing.

It often makes me feel better. Maybe it’ll work for you.

Hey, would any of you nerds like these nice paperback editions of the Hornblower series?

If you pay for postage, I’ll send them to you. (I have omnibus editions.)

Australia only. First in, best dressed. Just reply below.

I can’t verify what’s in this confession, but it certainly seems plausible.

“I'm a developer for a major food delivery app. The 'Priority Fee' and 'Driver Benefit Fee' go 100% to the company. The driver sees $0 of it.”

Loathsome manipulation and exploitation.

My eldest kid gave me @patmillswriter.bsky.social’s memoir of 2000AD for Christmas and this discussion of UK vs French royalties was a kick in the guts.

Comics are one of the great creative crucibles of the 20th century, and the exploitation of writers & artists is appalling (and so destructive).

I’m back here briefly to say that the Guardian’s asking for nominations for your favourite children’s picture book and I’d be thrilled if you’d nominate my debut: MY NANNA IS A NINJA. www.theguardian.com/culture/2025...

Hey, nerds. I’ll be taking a social media break until next year.

There’s nothing wrong, I’ve just had enough!

I hope you have a great end of year, folks.

Now here’s a cheesy video repeating much of what I’ve just said:

Never buy comics, kids. Just don’t do it.

(I will absolutely buy more comics.)

It’s maddening! I use a Leuchtturm for my assorted notes and observations, and A4 Clairefontaine spiral bound notebooks for my ongoing fiction and nonfiction projects.

It’s not perfect, but it works for me.

A fraction of these:

“When I was little, my father was famous.

“He was the greatest samurai in the empire, and he was the shōgun's decapitator.

“He cut off the heads of a hundred and thirty one lords.

“It was a bad time for the empire.”
