An image of a letter dated 14 December 1959, addressed to a schoolgirl in America who had requested advice on writing. The letter provides eight pieces of advice: Turn off the radio. Read all the good books you can and avoid nearly all magazines. Write (and read) with the ear, not the eye, ensuring every sentence sounds natural when read aloud. Write about what genuinely interests you, whether real or imaginary, emphasizing clarity of purpose. Be clear and remember that the reader doesn’t know what you mean unless you communicate it effectively. Don’t discard work you’ve given up on; set it aside as it might be useful later. Avoid using a typewriter as the noise disrupts the rhythm necessary for writing. Understand the meaning of every word you use. The letter is candid, practical, and insightful, aimed at fostering good writing habits.
