At Zweisimmen we slowly run through a gauge changer, which increases the width of our wheel-base from metre to standard gauge.

I've taken a small swiss army knife on Eurostar plenty of times. Even kept it in my pockets through the metal detectors at Gare du Nord once, and the border guard just laughed.

At the same time, the fact that a purely diesel class is so widely used just goes to show how poor our rate of electrification has been since the 1960s. It simply isn't viable to invest in new build electric traction.

That's a shame, but understandable. It's a lovely scenic journey! I took that route earlier this year on the Istria sleeper train from Budapest.

Indeed, although I have my doubts if the dining car will be open. I certainly hope so. Certainly an interesting composition over the Semmering, and with an 1144 no less.

Always a pleasant experience in those restaurant cars. Looks like the stock, including the Pano car, will be used on a Graz to Wien IC from December, returning in the morning. Worth checking out next year!
