Rrrrrrrising up, back on my beat
Travelled through time, took some chances
Went quite a distance, didn't make it to Crete
Just a Time Lord and his will to survive...

Quite a bit of liquid courage to be found in the episodes themselves, come to think of it!

After many recommendations, I'm now reading Una McCormack's novelisation of The Robot Revolution and already liking the fact that there's a lot more MissBelindaBackstory in this:

"Total Perspective Vortex." A Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy fan - yes!

"Alistair? It's Doris. I expect you're on your way to the trial by now. Would you be a dear & tell them Battlefield's a lot of fun, but the book version is better? I've got it right here, it's very good. Oh and pick up some supper on the way home, would you? I'll be at the garden center again. Bye!"

THE HOUSEMAID is a clever little mousetrap of a movie, all setups & misdirection in a throwback to those trashy home invasion thrillers from the 90s, with some twists I genuinely didn't see coming. Amanda Seyfried & Sydney Sweeney are both fantastic, even if it deserved a tighter 90-minute runtime.

First up, I’m planning a look back (of sorts) at the full run of Series 2 for its (eek!) 20th anniversary. Along with that I'll also be doing some deep-dives back into Classic Doctor Who, which is still woefully underrepresented in France. I've already got a couple ideas about The Reign of Terror!

I’m MUCH more interested in picking at a thread & seeing how far I can unravel it, i.e. “Here’s a fun, new or interesting thing I noticed about this story/actor/sequence, so let’s see if we can try and spin a whole yarn out of it!”

🚨COMING 2026!🚨

This year, I will be *finally* be living up to my moniker of “French Daniel” and starting a new (not up yet, still forthcoming!) YouTube channel called PARLEZ-VOUS DOCTOR WHO? – where I’ll be posting a series of video essays about Doctor Who… but en Français!

Words of wisdom, words of power.

25. What an ending! Charles Dickens, walking the snowy Cardiff streets. Laughing, reinvigorated, drunk on life even though it won't last:

“Merry Christmas to you. God bless us, everyone!”

24. The CGI effect of the TARDIS' dematerialisation and the snow resting on top of it actually DISPERSES as it fades away. Gorgeous touch.

23.

“In the box? Both of you?”
“Down, boy. See ya.”

Yeah, Dickens was a prophet.

22. A great closing crane-shot of Rose, the Doctor and Dickens gazing at the blazing funeral parlour. Interesting how it frames Rose in the centre, with the Doctor & Dickens on either side of her. Probably because she was the one who actually befriended Gwyneth? There’s no fancy hero-shot here.

21. “There are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Even for you, Doctor.”

Love that line. Sometimes, you don’t need to explain everything. Especially in a ghost story.

20. Look how gentle Eccleston is here. One of my favorite qualities in his Doctor is how he so often positions himself as an enabling figure, rather than a take-charge action hero; bequeathing save-the-day heroics to ordinary people who find that power in themselves, even it brings great sacrifice.
December 26, 2025 at 6:56 PM
19. “I’m so glad I met you.”
“Me too.”

These two have hardly just met and are now facing certain death together, and yet they still have a brave smile for each other. Such a beautiful pay-off to the mini character journey we’ve been watching them go on for 3 stories now.
December 26, 2025 at 6:56 PM
18. A very Classic Who climax, in that the Gelth’s world-threatening invasion doesn't amount to much more than a handful of extras (made-up as undead zombies) stumbling around a small cellar and rattling the bars of a gate. Bit of a comedown into time-to-stop-the-monsters-now territory! Oh, well...
December 26, 2025 at 6:56 PM
17. I always thought the moment where Sneed gets his neck snapped was bit awkward; but then... it probably is in real life.

Never noticed before that Rose *turns her head away* when it happens, though!
December 26, 2025 at 6:56 PM
16. A post-script of sorts to the pantry scene: Rose doesn’t quite realise she’s been condescending to Gwyneth much as a privileged, educated lady would; she thinks she knows better because she’s smarter than her. Until Gwyneth gently calls her out for assuming she can make decisions on her behalf.
December 26, 2025 at 6:56 PM
15. Eccleston is so charming in those early scenes, then a lot more aloof; yet still empathetic. I love how he gets snappy with Dickens & then goes to apologize to him later; and how, after he & Rose have argued over Gwyneth like she isn’t there, he gently tells her, “You don’t HAVE to do anything.”
December 26, 2025 at 6:56 PM
14. Serving tea; a recurring pastime in Gatiss stories. Even Daleks and Ice Warriors get in on the action! Did I mention he’s so BRITISH?
