Okay, will move on, seems like we’ve exhausted the space for fruitful discussion here

Panpsychism isn’t a single coherent movement - what you’re describing is one specific ideology that uses panpsychist ideas, which absolutely is dangerous. But if you’re lumping folks like, idk, Strawson and Goff in with them, you’ve gone off the rails

Speaking as someone whose personal beliefs have been shaped significantly by process philosophy and the varieties of panexperientialism associated with it, my engagement with those ideas leads to me opposing TESCREAL positions much more often than not

Of course there are various influences from all over on different thinkers. But what you’re describing is just one aspect of a complex and heterogeneous phenomenon

The contemporary revival of panpsychism in Western philosophy departments goes back to at least Nagel in the 70s, though - when someone like Philip Goff responds to him, that’s very much participating in a home grown tradition distinct from what’s going on with Silicon Valley transhumanist types

Historically this isn’t really accurate to how panpsychism developed in the West, which is a process that primarily draws on pre-Cold-War Western sources like Whitehead - the particular way that Cosmism has been incorporated into TESCREAL is one niche expression that’s not representative

Ah, Marin. Just as normal as ever, I see

“Not un-Stalinist” is an incredible circumlocution

Also in how much its economy is mostly based on government institutions (military bases and national labs) - I believe it’s the highest proportion of state revenue from federal sources

I need a different reaction than liking for this… :/

I think the issue is that a decade is longer than the planning horizon for most people and there’s so much suffering and uncertainty in the meantime, everything after that just feels like speculative fiction. It’s basically an act of faith to persist knowing it won’t be forever

Was just commenting on an aspect of this lol
Can I just say as an American it feels bizarre the extent the British media has started fawning over the American right in the last decade? Like, the BBC is covering Charlie Kirk as prominently as CNN, that’s weird

Spain is great, although one thing to be aware of is that there’s significant variation between the autonomous communities. Specifically Catalonia and probably Valencia are the best areas for trans things

Anyone claiming we have no better options than Gavin Newsom when JB Pritzker is right there simply is not contributing anything useful to the conversation

If it weren’t for the TERF shitheads I’d probably be living there right now, and every time I’ve visited this year it’s felt like the UK is taunting me with all the things that are still nice about it in spite of the past few governments’ best efforts, it’s maddening
September 3, 2025 at 9:04 AM
Okay, but unless you’ve been there to see it firsthand, there’s no reason to trust Maduro’s rhetoric, either. Both of our governments can be doing bad things

I don’t feel like that accurately describes most of the leftists that I know… but that’s part of the problem, the left is so fragmented and infighty
September 2, 2025 at 10:00 PM
This is the rub - I think a lot of self-described liberals basically function the same way as conservatives in assuming that things that make them uncomfortable are wrong, they just have a smaller set of qualms directed at more acceptable targets
September 2, 2025 at 9:42 PM
The actual answer is it depends what part, but like 2/3 of it is Midwest, and thus if you’re insisting on a single region to describe the state, that’s the most appropriate choice

And then you have the oddballs whose work is downright misleading about their politics. It still baffles me that a homophobic Mormon could write the original Ender quartet
August 27, 2025 at 10:38 PM
Yeah, there were definitely precursors, like of course you had medieval rationalism with the scholastics as well. But the way it got distilled in that era (and earlier in the reformation) feels like an inflection point to me
August 27, 2025 at 10:11 PM
My sense is that this is all tied up in the legacy of Enlightenment rationalism. It gave us that sense there’s a single objectively correct way to understand the world that’s existentially important to get right, which spawns all kinds of movements - this, new atheism, some flavors of politics, etc

That’s crazy, what are you going to tell me next - that 30-minute annual HR videos don’t magically instill wokeness in people?
