In November 2015, a chance meeting between Dr. Jim Jansen and representatives of AJ+, an Al Jazeera social media channel, led to a discussion of the difficulties of using the many analytics platforms available. It was at that meeting the concept of Automatic Persona Generation (APG) emerged. That meeting led to a set of algorithmic approaches to improve user understanding by presenting analytics and numbers in a form that most people can relate to—another person! Since that impactful meeting, the APG Project team members and collaborators have developed innovative approaches, identified and created new processes, implemented technology products, designed services, and devised delivery methods for data-driven personas—all aimed at enhanced user understanding. Many of these advances have been published in research articles, intellectual property disclosures, and online postings. This book takes these published manuscripts, enhances them, polishes them, and integrates them into a coherent lecture that serves as a foundation for the future advancement of data-driven personas, data-driven personas systems, and data-driven personas research. The driver for APG and the related research is inspired by Papa John’s slogan— Better Personas! Better Decisions! Better Results!
