Thanks to @iamdavidbrothers.com mention, started Tower Dungeon last night. Few cartoonists have the desire to explore a world and space like Tsutomo Nihei. Which of course makes him perfect for a fantasy series that it’s surprising he took so long to do one.

Excited for the slate of Graphic Novels I’ve picked to discuss for the graphic novel club at my LCS’ Blackbird Comics and Coffee next year. We’re kicking the year off with Jen Wang’s excellent The Prince and the Dressmaker.

Then the Black, White, & Red, and Red, White, & Black anthologies exposed me to such a wide variety of artists. All three key texts for me when it comes to comics.

Doing a Grendel read through and I forgot what a truly foundational book this was for me in high school. @mattwagnercomics.bsky.social experiments with form in Devil by the Deed fundamentally changed the way that I understood comics.

Nakadai famously worked with Kurosawa, especially in those later years. But he also made films with a murderer’s row of Japanese cinematic giants. Some included Kihachi Okamoto, Masaki Kobayashi, and even Isao Takahata.

He was frequently cast opposite Toshiro Mifune. Mifune is one of the greats but honestly, it was genius to cast Nakadai against him. Truly their conflicts were the cinematic equivalent of the immovable object meeting the unstoppable force.”
