I’ve always seen them as a SWAT type assault weapon used to pacify interiors. The type of violence inflicted on a no knock narcotics warrant.

If he ever takes the stand, I want to know why he first circled the vehicle. I think he was checking the rear seats for children. That ultimately speaks to premeditation, and the fact that he simply chose to execute her.
