You've just reminded me that I spoke there about 13 years ago - good luck and have fun!

Yeah - there's a big difference between the people earning £200k and using it as a way to avoid tax as an employee, which was why IR35 was introduced, and those on anywhere up to say £100,000, either solo or with multiple directors...

be more progressive, even.

If you're earning under around or under the average UK wage as a solo director, for example, you're not taking dividends as a tax dodge - you're doing it to make self-employment viable.

The need for a lower tax burden is also because being freelance/self-employed often means you're not employed 5 days a week, and if you are, then you're working longer hours to keep up with admin, invoicing, bookeeping etc.

As with general income, it needs to me more progressive to help SMEs.

Plus the tax offset partly accounts for the increased risk, buying your own gear, sick days, holidays, any insurance required etc etc, most of which is covered by an employer.

Is that including the initial corporation tax if you're a solo director though?

It will depend on individual income/payment structure etc, but it's costing me more now than in previous years.

Don't forget IR35, the MTD accounting rules, and the fact they seem happy to help larger firms. Just not the little people.

"It’s not fair that the tax system treats different types of income so differently,"

That's because being self-employed is a much different type of income than taking a salary...

I remember years ago when a Japanese motorcycle manufacturer accidentally leaked their range ahead of time and we broke the news - apparently their CEO called us a very rude word...

I'm in a similar situation with 15+ years of using Gmail/Workspace, but this is the straw that finally convinved me it's time to find a decent alternative and go through the pain of sorting everything out...

For non-core stuff I'm OK with webmail imported into Thunderbird...
November 21, 2025 at 3:21 PM
I'm planning on checking out alternatives very soon - especially as I've only checked a free Gmail account, but if they've also made it a hidden opt out for my paid account, I'm going to be particularly grumpy.

Normally I worry that an acquisition will mean price rises and every add-on being charged, but SEMRush already had those areas well-covered...

I'm definitely curious why Adobe have decided to do it, and why now...
