We’re being told (or it is being implied) that we shouldn’t make political statements right now. But here’s the thing: respecting and recognizing the humanity of our transgender brothers and sisters (and of the whole LGBTQ community) is a matter of humanity, and one I am not willing to be silent on.

So many things I appreciated, but among the top ones, definitely the book’s bold and funny exploration of identity and sexuality (both human and non 🤓) and its vivid description of what it would mean to interact with nature in a highly futuristic world. And the captivating writing of course!

I just finished reading “The Terraformers” by @annaleen.bsky.social and it made me so happy I need to share it here. It is rare to find such forward-looking, powerful sci-fi that manages to be hopeful about humanity while not shying away from its problems.

Dudes in dresses, obviously!

It depends a lot on the mood. Of course there are go-tos like LOTR, and Ursula LeGuin has many novels that are masterpieces and I love re-reading often. But if I had to choose my favorite it would be The Once and Future King by White. There is something there that moves me in ways nothing else does.

what scientists can provide is plan, be transparent about goals and aims, and work to provide both the scientific rationale for it and the pathway to a safe implementation.

as a potential *complement* (never a substitute) to decarbonisation for managing climate risk. Other people can disagree, and that's ok! Future decisions will not be up to me or any other single person:

Here we lay out how that could be done safely, and successfully, considering a range of (increasing) scales with safeguards at every step. I think doing this kind of research is incredibly important, and could lead to much better insight into the potential risks as well as benefits of SAI...

If you want to resolve scientific uncertainties around SAI (would it work as intended? are there things we have not foreseen in our models?), outdoor experiments with careful tracking and measurements will be necessary, as well as plans on how to improve the underlying modeling basis we use.

Together with providing an overview of what we know (and how we know it) about sulfate and its role in climate, and how Stratospheric Aerosol Injections *might* contribute to cooling in the future, we also go through a proposal for a "clinical trial" for SAI.

Molly, great article. But there are multiple scientific assessments of the potential risks (and benefits) of SRM, like a NASEM report and a Ozone Assessment from the Montreal Protocols: why link to the CIEL report that is unscientific and full of disinformation (not dissimilar from Greene's)?

I have a large collection 🙃
danvisioni.bsky.social
Or you can go listen to the House Committee hearing where a meteorology undergrad with no understanding of physics and a nepo-baby share trite climate denialism and discuss how to ban SRM research with the most nuts-o member of congress, that also works!

Today we joined Natalie Mahowald, Lead Author of the IPCC 1.5SRE, to have a wide-ranging discussion on the topic of geoengineering, from the science to the governance challenges and ethical implications. Thanks to @cornelluniversity.bsky.social for organizing!

A fair question to ask: however, using our estimates in an Energy-Balance Model indicate a cooling of around 0.03C, so too small to detect in the global temperature record over a couple of years, considering other sources of variability.

It will surprise the readers to know that this is not just the practice of the new DOE, but of many other "holier than thou" groups who have decided that lying about science when it doesn't align with their values is ok when they do it. They're trying to send a message, you see?
danvisioni.bsky.social
and dismissing research that disagrees with your desired conclusions by claiming that those other researchers are driven by shady interests, would result in such assessment saying exactly what you wanted from the beginning, uh?

(and no, this is not just about the DOE report)
danvisioni.bsky.social
Who would have guessed that putting together your own group of people to write an "assessment" with the specific goal from the beginning to come out with a specific set of conclusions, cherry-picking data, highlighting uncertainties to imply there is no understanding, ...

When Hunga happened, some suggested it would lead to net warming, due to the large burden of H2O injected in the stratosphere. Models generally didn't find this for a few reasons: mainly, i) water vapor too high up from the tropopause and ii) H2O leading to quick formation of large sulfate aerosols
danvisioni.bsky.social
Out as preprint, we have some very interesting results looking at the radiative forcing impacts of the 2022 Hunga eruption. Based on the outcomes of the related OMIP, with many models from all over the world participating in this effort, we find a robust cooling signal from the Hunga volcanic plume.

Tomorrow is the start of my Climate Dynamics course. While I was incredibly excited to teach it before -I ❤️ this class- this year feels exciting in different ways: doesn’t matter who is in charge or what censorship they demand, physics’s physics. More motivated than ever to engage with my students!😎
