Anyway, this is your regular reminder that my Signal is available in my bio, and that if you have something you want publicly known I'm happy to chat with you about it and come up with a plan.

Not so that I can break it -- breaking news isn't my profession anymore! -- but so it can get out there.

the guy who caught cal raleigh’s homer was wearing a shirt that said dump 61 here and he immediately took it off and had a shirt that said dump 62 here

I BET IT WAS

the quartet that starts with that book is one of my favorite things I’ve read this decade

If it seems chilly to you emotionally but you like it otherwise I recommend continuing with the sequel. Otherwise if you don’t like it no pressure.

I have read a couple short stories I liked a lot, and a couple New Yorker essays that seemed to me a classic case of “just because you’re great at fiction doesn’t mean you’re great at reporting,” but I’d definitely recommend giving this a try if you’re at all inclined.

Oh while I’m here: Bel Canto! So far, a real treasure to read!

The Luminaries, OTOH, I EXTREMELY DID NOT get into, and have had to bail out of because it was taking so long that I was in danger of letting other library loans lapse

Regret to inform that Lincoln In The Bardo is indeed, as everyone has been saying for a decade, Extremely Good

In all other respects this is very nearly perfect, with the exception of a need for either seven-grain bread or avocado toast

XLB very much don’t belong here, right?

I mean, neither is incentivized by either the financial or the attention economy

But Portland seems to be having a lot of fun

After the VTech shooting a dean banned the use of stage weapons that weren’t obviously fake.

We had multiple shows going up that weekend and you KNOW how dangerous fight choreography is when you switch props last minute.

Anyway our Facebook-planned jugglefest secured a reversal before day of

I’m almost sorry that my 19-year-old self, who was so so eager to use her experimental-theatre x political-debating-society connections to mount some fun and spectacular protests, isn’t here for this moment and we get my 37-year-old, actually-paid-to-write-but/so-less-cool self instead

Like, obviously I’ve been a fan since way back but it’s so good to see someone who’s often seemed just a tiny bit uncomfortable in the job they were in come up with the job that is Exactly Right For Them

When do we talk about the meteoric rise of @pablo.show

But that’s the only way to stop them from being assholes to _your other followers?_

Alito was a Little League coach so between him, Sotomayor, and Kagan I like our chances tbh

Blake Treinen is losing and that’s good

Omg ew I’m sorry. Absolutely block for that behavior.

Before we go too much further here let’s remember that the other team is Canadian

Can we also subject “clash” to this treatment

DC hasn’t had as much in the way of protest diversion as other cities, so I’m not sure about this. MPD presence hasn’t really changed in my neighborhood one way or the other

In recent months I’ve heard an editor say, in a tone that suggested they assumed I already knew because it was something happening across the board, that it was hard to get readers to engage with immigration stories rn.

Immigration. In 2025.

If we want this fixed we have to fix it.

Paying for news helps, but it’s usually not sufficient, because those outlets are still making decisions all the time about what to cover. If you’re subscribing but not reading, or if what you’re reading isn’t what made you subscribe to begin with, you’re creating incentives you don’t want followed.
