Hi #BlueSky!

I am a final year undergrad
@exetermarine.bsky.social researching the spatio-temporal distribution of #bycatch injuries to further understand dolphin-fishery interactions in Cornwall.

I’m excited to connect with fellow marine mammal enthusiasts on this awesome platform! 🐋

Whilst we have had a great field season and have deployed 11 tags in two days on elephant seals 🦭, we can’t ignore the unthinkable amount of plastic in this, one of the most isolated areas of the world.

Finally attended my first marine mammal post-mortem yesterday evening with the team at Cornwall Marine Pathology!🥼

It was fascinating to assist in examining these two adult common 🐬s. Incredible how much valuable data can be collected from these for so much further research🧑‍🔬🔬

I had a superb week attending @ukirsc.bsky.social at St Andrews. I loved hearing all about ongoing research projects at the forefront of MMS & can’t wait to see the outputs of these. A BIG thanks to all speakers, & to the committee for organising a phenomenal conference! Can’t wait for the next 🦭

It's officially HUMPBACK season in Cornwall 🐋 which means countless hours scanning the horizon, battling the 🥶 & straining my eyes!! The whales are thought to stop here to ‘refuel’ on their way ⬇️ to ❄️ breeding grounds. So get out, keep your 👀 peeled, & you might just get lucky!!

2 / They concluded that this was an old male in poor condition, suffering from cystitis. We rarely get the opportunity to PM mature Risso’s dolphins, & it was somewhat reassuring knowing he lived to old age 🫀

Our new paper outlines methods to ID albatross and petrel species using DNA from feathers. This provides tools to determine which #seabirds species are threatened by fisheries bycatch
