"Sitting on several million pounds worth" of assets. Taxed only as part of an estate (someone dies!). If its a farm the tax is half the rate for others (e.g. owners of "family" hotels worth millions but not necessarily profitable) with 10 years to pay. I have sympathy but it's limited.

We had similar hoo haa about “civil liberty” to go about endangering ourselves an others over seat belts and smoking bans. Ultimately it’s not “civil” to promote behaviours that cause injury or death however much “liberty” you feel you should have.

I am able to claim truthfully that I was there at the 1981 Headingley Test Match. I often end the recounting there as, truthfully, I was only there on days 1, 2 & 3 (during which Australia built a seemingly unassailable position (and Dennis Lillee and Rodney Marsh placed bets on England at 500-1)….🤦🏻♂️

Its ownership might change (for the worse in terms of standards and variety) but it will still be there. Why is there a need to conflate the payment of a tax, which applies to everyone above the threshold (except its halved for farmers), with a "class war attack on rural communities".

Yes farming is different. So is open heart surgery and policing, and social care and hospitslity and light or heavy industry and transport. All are needed and have unique challenges. Why will farming disappear?
