The fact that it’s a capstone set and is just squished in between more UB and we won’t have any meaningful follow-up to it sucks.
Majority of the year being UB really irks me.

I have been saying this everywhere and to everyone I can. WOTC has the perfect opportunity with Through the Omenpaths to print a paper option that appeals to those who don’t like UB that can possibly be cheaper as it gets around licensing stuff.

Man what a flavor miss for shadow summoning to have Innistrad art and flavor text when reprinted in a Tarkir Dragonstorm precon. Like Abzan is right there with spirits being core to their identity.

I think Final Fantasy was a bit of a lesson that when you fill a set to the brim with legends so that it accurate representation of the source material, commander decks may just be overkill.

Datto pls read Red Rising next, and my subs are yours

I mean hell, FF had 98 new legendary creatures, which is the largest number of legendary creatures in a standard set ever by far, eclipsing MOM by around 60.
July 22, 2025 at 3:17 PM
The in-universe sets are feeling much lighter on legendaries since MOM, and I think part of that is to compensate for the design behind UB sets. UB demands high numbers of legendary creatures to make those sets feel representative of their IPs, so WOTC seems to hold back on in-universe sets more.

Wow, I did not catch that detail. That is good narrative and card design synergy!

I really enjoyed Alpharael’s and Halya’s crisis of faith throughout the story, and I hope that we get to see the two of them again.

Fast combo. I’d rather the pain be over with than drag myself through an hour+ game of slow control bullshit

Magic essentially making canon wall-hacks with Alpharael is a fun and goofy bit

I also found that in a limited pre-release environment, Blue-Green with a splash of black has just insane potential. In my pre-release alone, all the top 3 were Sultai with slightly different play styles. Boros/Mardu was the second most prevalent, while other archetypes were few and far between.

I think the overwhelming potential of a board full of job select equipments can outpace most other archetypes in the limited environment though. Being able to consistently dish out 3-4 damage a turn, sometimes starting as early as turn 2 is a hard pace to beat.

I have found that Job Select and summons are wildly impactful. Job Select offerings tend to be pretty low cost but allow for early game beaters that can quickly outpace the opponent. Summon: Titan has been a sleeper hit and has enabled the win in almost every game I’ve pulled off the last chapter.

I’m almost done with Episode 2 and I do have to say, the amount of exposition and world building is staggering. They’re doing a lot to set up Sethora, and I can really appreciate the rules and details they put in place. That being said, the lack of identifiable characters yet does leave me wanting.

We saw an almost identical art style on march of the machine and many other similar packaging lineups.
I don’t think we’ll actually see this art in set, it’s just flashy and good at catching eyes the same way Anime art typically does.

I too am a big universes within advocate. I also really think that if they’re going to be doing a digital universes within version, then they should print a physical version as well for players who’d prefer that than the UB versions of cards. Make it a more limited run if you have to WOTC.
June 4, 2025 at 5:36 AM
I’m 100% with you. I really liked how the writer also highlighted how the familiarity of some characters like Cloud is what took them out of it being a magic set. My gripe with UB is it needs to feel like magic or the experience is compromised, and LOTR handled that perfectly versus FF.

Tezz is just radiating big bad villain energy and nothing comes close to him

Right? Like wtf when did the Midwest turn into a god damn desert?
May 17, 2025 at 12:20 AM
I’ve been a big proponent of MTG doing this kind of treatment for UB IPs instead of full on sets, so I’m really glad to see it happening.
I hope to see more and more of it in future UB sets.
May 15, 2025 at 8:31 PM
I feel that for many of the new cards. Mechanically great synergies for decks I have, but flavorfully are so off. I’m starting to look into some sort of proxy universes within method

Thank you for all the hard work and dedication you put into your craft!

Small detail, but I heavily associate Magali’s art with MTG as a whole and seeing her art on UB cards does help to kind of mend the disconnect I feel between UB and MTG as a whole.
