I loved game manuals back in the day. Especially the ones that were filled with lore and were thematic. Homeworld had a great one with lore history and tactics while Jane’s Longbow 2 manual looked like a real combat helicopter flight manual. It was so thick!

This also applies to my pet peeve with dialogue. While I may be biased here as I write dialogue in games for a living, it really irks me when there's long winded exposition heavy dialogue at totally inappropriate times. "Oh the enemy is right behind that door? Let me tell you about the time when..."

Apart from the usual NES games, like Mega-Man 2 and Ducktales, my retro fare includes old PC/Amiga games. SWIV, Shufflepuck Cafe, Sierra and Lucasarts games, It Came From the Desert and Another World. These stories shaped my work.
