A folktale.
"And that it is this that we are discussing." Clearly, we are having different discussions here. I'm not telling anyone what to do. I was interested in talking about copyright and its effects on art and culture, and the state of our system in general, but I guess this is just not gonna happen.

I mean, that's true for anyone though. No matter your profession, your family's financial well-being would be impacted by your death, surely. I'm not saying people don't deserve their income or their kids shouldn't have an inheritance. Income through copyright specifically, for 100 years is at issue

There may be a perfectly good argument in defense of copyright outliving the creator, however, "If it's public domain my whole family will starve" isn't a great one. It's really missing the point imo, which is why I commented in the first place. "The world sucks so let's all keep sucking" sucks.

It was relevant to the conversational thread I was following. People are proposing hypotheticals in defense of IP laws, invoking elderly parents and young children left behind. In that context, it's wholly appropriate to point out that there are larger, systemic issues at play w/ greater impact.

No 8 year old can, or should. That's the point though. Most kids don't inherit copyright residuals, nor should that be a requirement to avoid child poverty. It's not personal, it's systemic. If generational wealth is the only way to avoid poverty, we're screwed.
