Personally I'd blame the reduced resources spent on optimization. "In the days of yore" devs would work for months or years to get every bit of performance out of "common" specs. That is a cost, and doesn't make game LOOK better on demos and screenshots. Enshittification again, in another area.

Reminds me of my last week at one place, where I found out, that the (Java) app can sometimes compile "wrong" for the hosting system, and it can be fixed by e.g. adding a letter to a comment, to change the resulting JAR. Yes, a comment. Yes, I tried it out in all combinations late into the night xD

At least Windows (and others as well) now come with drivers for "most" stuff - no more needing second PC to copy a driver to a floppy or a cd, so you can enable USB, and use your "modern" keyboard instead of the PS/2 one xD
