ICE arrested someone inside an Alameda County courthouse on Sept. 15. This is the first time a courthouse arrest has happened in Oakland.

Public Defender Brendon Woods blasted the federal agency and is calling on local leaders to prevent more incidents like this.

In fast moving news situations where you're not personally in a position to obtain information from credible sources, it's best to stay quiet, listen, read, and think critically.

Like many departments, they're citing a 2020 DOJ memo that requires not sharing sensitive law enforcement information over the radio. However, lots of departments are complying with this by still allowing public access to patrol channels while having sensitive information go out over cell phones.

Oddly enough, the OPD radio came back on a little while ago. Unclear what's going on with the department. I've called and sent some questions via email and will post updates as I learn more.

The Oakland Police Department's decision to encrypt its radio transmissions is bad for transparency and the public's understanding of public safety issues. It will severly limit the press's ability to report breaking news and lots more.

Well, the Oakland Police Department did it.

They've encrypted their patrol channels. The public can no longer monitor this important communications feed of 911 calls, dispatches, and officer reports from the streets.

This will negatively impact journalists ability to report on Oakland.
