I am making a documentary about a Black physician who was denied hospital admitting privileges in the Jim Crow era, co-founded and led a Black hospital for decades, and was the first African American to run for public office in Alabama since Reconstruction. www.docgoodefilm.com

Thinking like a historian: there will be indelible images from this moment that will live on in history classrooms for decades. If you knew that future Americans would see this image as part of their education, which side of the photo would you want to be on?

I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

Sen. Ruben Gallego: "Mike Johnson is holding Congress out of session for two reasons: number one, so that way there are no negotiations; and number two, to cover for all the pedophiles on Epstein's list...They're covering for pedophiles and dropping your healthcare coverage."

Important in public health history is @uofgshw.bsky.social's James McCune Smith, the first African American to obtain a medical degree. He had a long career as a respected medical doctor, writer, civil rights advocate & welfare campaigner for patients at Glasgow's infamous Lock hospital #BHM25
Portrait of James McCune Smith & Quote: McCune Smith’s legacy is a reminder of the importance of representation in medicine and public health. His advocacy for patient welfare and social justice remains relevant today, as certain communities continue to face barriers to accessing equitable healthcare and are underrepresented in medical leadership and research.

Conversion therapy for minors is child abuse. It robs them of the two things they need most: a secure attachment with their parents rooted in acceptance, care and unconditional love; and a secure attachment to their own precious, authentic selves.

The rising costs of private health insurance and health care are still a problem. Barring Medicare for All (which I support), the short-term answer is to pass new legislation to improve the ACA (as Biden and the Dem Congress did), not to go back to the bad old days. /2

The Affordable Care Act has not failed, it has succeeded. Before the ACA, premiums were rising at a faster rate, the quality of group plans was declining, and the number of uninsured and uninsurable Americans was much higher. /1

🧵 #MythBustingTuesday
The CDC reportedly floated separating the MMR into individual shots without any published evidence that doing so improves safety.
Let’s unpack why this myth persists, what the data show, and why countries like Senegal are moving in the opposite direction.

Just eight months ago, this administration was strongly coercing thousands of federal employees to take an early retirement. Now they want people to keep working. You can't have it both ways.

It has always been the case that getting the Israelis and Palestinians to agree on the "details" is the hardest part. And that requires focus and trust-building that are far beyond what the Trump administration has shown itself to be capable of. So I don't think there is reason to be hopeful. /4

As for Trump, he wants to keep his oligarch friends happy and to win a Nobel Prize. He has threatened and cajoled both parties, which may result in a short-term cease fire and release of hostages. But he has no vision and says he will leave the "technical details" to the experts. /3

The Arab State oligarchs, who are very obviously driving this train, sincerely want the war to end and the killing of innocents to stop, as do most of us. But do they have any interest in building up a viable, self-governing Palestinian state? That is highly doubtful, given their history. /2

If a cease fire happens this week, it will be a genuinely good diplomatic achievement and step in the right direction. However, from what I've seen, it is likely to fall apart fairly quickly and be exposed as another shell game by Trump and his cronies. /1

This is looking very much like the Russia-Ukraine war, in that Trump issues strong words, which are immediately ignored by Putin and there are no consequences.

The GOP House passed a budget that indulged all of their worst ideas, with no compromises whatsoever for Dem votes they wanted and needed.

There's no good reason for Senate Dems to help the GOP with such a bill, no good reason to share blame and give them "bipartisan" cover for wanton destruction.
simonwdc.bsky.social
A central reason we're in this mess is that the final GOP budget is going to be full of ugly, deeply unpopular stuff - exploding deficits, destructive tariffs, cuts to health care/clear energy/food, supersizing ICE, tax cuts for billionaires - that Rs simply don't want to take responsibility for. 1/
