Being able to say 'We sorted out the A5 between Hinckley and Cannock and made sure people in Leicester could get reliably to London in an hour' isn't nothing, but having people pay more to still be stuck in hopeless, meaningless traffic or at shit, shit train stations, that's visible decline

I agree with all this, but also, stop pissing about with infrastructure. Roads are jammed, they've just cancelled MML electrification for the 4th time. It's not nice-to-have, it's growth, and also visible investment for everyone to see. Smother it in hoardings saying 'Your taxes paid for this'

It’d cost a billion I reckon, and probably close Leicester station entirely for a year. So it just gets left to rot

The whole cutting/viaduct is four tracks wide, the tunnel is under Putney Road. They’d need to separate out the main line and Nuneaton line to get the capacity they need, and so the junction for the Ivanhoe line would have to be on the left-hand tracks, then it has to swap over to get to Melton

Who can forget when Staring At The Sun was on TOTP Night recently, and everyone looked so, so bored, especially the actual band

I think I liked one of their singles in about 1999, but can't remember a single actual thing about it

Re: the Roses, it also doesn't help that any subsequent work (The Seahorses, Ian Brown's solo work, their reunion, that album Squire made with Liam Gallagher) was utter, utter dogshit

The strategic plan was to restore four tracks through to Syston, a flyover at Wigston, reopen the tunnel under Freeman’s Common, redouble the junction for the Ivanhoe Line, a station at Leicester South, two new platforms at London Road, would have been colossal. And very very much needed, but no

The real reason is if they’d run wires through Leicester is they’d have had to sort out the horrific capacity bottleneck between Wigston and the station, reinstate the lost tracks, build a new junction for the Nuneaton-Peterborough line, it would cost millions
