I think both of these things are true. Fascists will use whatever they can as a weapon, in this case Christianity is just a very convenient one.
But we would still be better off if no one thought the bible was literal truth. That would have saved me quite a few panic attacks as a child.

I had a Portugese colleague at the Dutch university I worked at, who figured out a trick, he always would use the diminutive of every word, just so he wouldn't have to remember whether to use the feminine or masculine definite article.
