Meat consumption in India
Most Indians eat meat, and the share who eat meat is growing over time. Vegetarianism is more prevalent in some states and among some groups.

For instance, in 2006, nearly half of those who ate eggs consumed them only occasionally. By 2021, this share had dropped to a third, while the share of weekly egg consumers rose to over half. In 2006, a third of consumers of chicken/meat ate it weekly, but by 2021, this had increased to over half.
December 16, 2025 at 3:30 AM
Both the share of meat consumers and their frequency of consumption are higher in urban areas.

The frequency of consumption across all categories of animal protein has also increased over time.
December 16, 2025 at 3:30 AM
Eggs are the most commonly consumed (by 78% of Indians), followed by chicken/meat (75%) and fish (72%).

Among meat-eaters, the frequency of consumption is high. Most people who eat meat consume it at least once a week.

The National Family Health Survey asks a representative sample of respondents if they have consumed any of the three broad categories of animal proteins - eggs, fish and chicken/meat, and their frequency of consumption.

While the GDP reflects the total size of a country's economy, it does not on its own give a sense of individual well-being. Read Abhishek Waghmare’s piece to learn more about it: www.dataforindia.com/gdp/?utm_sou...
GDP and per capita income
India's economy is now the fifth largest in the world and is growing faster than most comparable countries. At the individual level, however, it is some distance from the world's richest countries.

Over the last decade, while India's nominal GDP (at current prices) has grown at an average rate of 10.9%, real GDP (at constant 2011-12 prices) has grown at 5.6% per year.

The difference between the two rates of growth is one measure of the general inflation in that year.
December 12, 2025 at 3:30 AM
As a result, economists make adjustments that remove the effect of inflation or price growth from nominal GDP, to get what is called the real GDP. For this, they look at GDP growth assuming that prices have remained the same as at a particular point in time.
December 12, 2025 at 3:30 AM
When GDP is calculated at current prices in local currency, it's called nominal GDP. This can mask the effect of rising prices — GDP may grow, but if food and input prices rise at the same rate, that doesn't translate to material improvements in life in the country.
December 12, 2025 at 3:30 AM
GDP growth is the change in GDP over time. It is used by governments, corporations, central banks and multilateral institutions to project national revenues, forecast demand for goods and services, assess future earnings from investments, among other calculations.

India's economy is now the fifth largest in the world, and projected to become the third largest by 2027.

Which other countries do Indian men and women migrate to and how have these trends evolved over time? Read Nileena Suresh’s analysis to find out: www.dataforindia.com/internationa...
International migration from India
Indians now make up the largest group of emigrants in the world, but their destination countries have changed significantly over time.

Unlike in the Gulf countries, where male Indian out-migrants far outnumber female out-migrants, the number of Indian-origin men and women in the USA and UK is nearly equal.
December 9, 2025 at 3:30 AM
Migration patterns differ significantly by gender. While men primarily migrate to the Gulf countries, women are more likely to move to the USA. In 2024, nearly one-quarter of Indian migrant women lived in the USA.
December 9, 2025 at 3:30 AM
Over one in three migrants from India in 2024 was a woman. The number of women migrants has increased from 2.6 million in 1990 to 6.6 million in 2024.
December 9, 2025 at 3:30 AM
India has the world's largest emigrant population, with over 18.5 million people of Indian origin living overseas in 2024, accounting for 6% of all international migrants globally. These figures reflect the total international migrant stock, not annual migration flows.

Median ages are higher still in India’s richer southern and western states, which are over a decade older than the poorer northern and eastern states, on average.

Population growth in India
After decades of growing faster than the world, India's population growth has slowed down dramatically.
www.dataforindia.com
December 5, 2025 at 3:31 AM
India is still a young country - the median Indian is 29 years old, meaning that half of the country is under the age of 29, while the median age of the world is nearly 31. However, it is now ageing rapidly, and will soon be older than the world on average.
December 5, 2025 at 3:31 AM
Improvements in health outcomes, particularly for very young children, have meant that the risk of dying very young in India has been declining. As a result, India's population is beginning to live longer, driving up the age of the population.
December 5, 2025 at 3:31 AM
Population growth is affected by the number of children born as well as the number of people who die every year. The slowdown in India's population growth has until now been powered by falling fertility alone. But rising mortality - or death rates - will increasingly play a role in the future.
December 5, 2025 at 3:31 AM
By the early 2060s, population growth is expected to turn negative and India will begin to have fewer people every year.
