As you mentioned tho, I feel the writers do acknowledge the endings message is unclear, it's why Crispin Glover didn't return for the sequels. So they used that to fuel Doc's arc in the sequels of realising the future isn't finite. 3 has a great ending, even if I think it's the weakest narratively
