New study! The messages that American kids receive about immigrants are really mixed 😕 but kids who see and hear good things (e.g., online) are more open to including new immigrant peers in their own social circles 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 #devpsyc #socialpsyc doi.org/10.1016/j.ap...

With Daudi van Veen (@daudivanveen.nl), Lena-Emilia Schenker, and Lynn Weisscher, children drew what they think a scientist looks like — sometimes resembling Harry Potter 🧙🏽‍♀️ — and explored how to break stereotypes. Their message was clear: They want the university to be a place for everyone.

What does the university of the future look like? On behalf of KiDLAB and Lil’Scientist, we asked children this question at the lustrum of The Young Academy.

Grateful for the incredible love and support at #SRCD2025 in response to the injustices and tragedies of recent deportations. I hope more conferences continue to stand in solidarity with scholars facing such hardships across the field. #DevPsych #PsychSci #Psysci

🙏🏽Definitely agree!

My colleague Ouissam Abattouy is researching this and related issues in her work (i.e., critically examining what autonomy looks like for adolescents, young adults, and their families in various cultural groups).

You can read more about it below.

Becoming an adult: how do you do that?
Ouissam Abattouy is being awarded the NWO Mozaïek 2.0 doctoral grant for her research into how young people with and without an immigrant background undergo the transition to adulthood.

I am calling on all #devpsyc colleagues to condemn & speak out about the abduction of Rumeysa Ozturk by the US govt on March 25, 2025. She is a developmental psychology graduate.

#childpsyc #developmentalpsyc #lifespanpsyc #acadmicsky #childrenandyouth @srcdorg.bsky.social @issbd.bsky.social
Dear Developmental Colleagues,
I’m a developmental psychologist, Associate Professor (Teaching), and Undergraduate Program Director for the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary. I specialize in social emotional learning, peer relationships, and children’s media.
On March 25th, a developmental psychology graduate student at Tufts University in Massachusetts was abducted by the United States government. Rumeysa Ozturk is a PhD student in Child Study & Human Development with a focus on prosocial development and children’s media. She is from Turkey and was studying in the USA on a student visa. Her visa was revoked when she participated in political letter writing asking Tufts University to acknowledge the Palestinian genocide. This political activity made her a target.
No peaceful political activity should ever lead to unlawful detainment. The Palestinian-Israel conflict is heartbreaking. My spouse and child are Jewish, we lost an Israeli family member on October 7th, 2022. I’ve seen increases in anti-semitism on university campuses in the past two years, but I know and I acknowledge that the majority of protestors are not hateful, and they want peace and human rights.
Rumeysa Ozturk is one of us. Therefore, I am calling on leaders in Developmental Psychology to stand up for Ozturk, to pressure academic societies such as SRCD, SRA, & ISSBD to release a statement regarding her unjust abduction. We need to shine a spotlight and put international pressure on this abduction to help ensure her safety and release. Please also consider writing your political representatives. Ozturk has been relocated from Massachusetts to Louisiana. Her lawyer has lost contact with her in the past day. Our efforts can make a difference during these critical days.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Hughes, PhD

Unfortunately, I don’t 😢. If you are looking for peer reviewers on other social-emotional developmental topics (particularly identity, prejudice, moral reasoning, prosociality), feel free to send them my way! 😊
