every Easter our street organizes an egg hunt for all the kiddies, and lots of residents contribute eggs. Usually these are hundreds of the mass-produced little plastic eggs, but a few years ago our home started buying papier-mâché eggs and hand-painting them, a dozen every year

He knew no french and had only forty dollars to his name. But the burgeoning novelist, essayist, and playwright felt he had to leave America to free himself from the racism that conspired to hinder his growth as an artist. In France, Buidwin created a kind of extended family that included the American painter Beauford Delaney and the musician Nina Simone-artists who, not unlike Baldwin, had survived poverty, segregation, and homophobia to become significant figures on the world stage. After nearly a decade in Paris, Baldwin felt compelled to retur to the United States. In 1957, he caught a glimpse of a picture of Dorothy Counts facing a hostile white crowd as she made her way to integrate a high school in North Carolina. "The photo made me furious," Baldwin recaled. "Everybody else was paying their dues, and it was time I went home and paid mine." Back home, Baldwin wrote, marched, and made speeches while supporting the work of activist friends and associates, such as Lorraine Hansberry and Bayard Rustin- queer thinkers who, despite their excep tional rhetoric, were not out during the civil rights movement; the general feeling was that their difference would undermine the cause. Toward the end of his life, Baldwin taked about his sexuality more openly, but it was his strong desire to always "bear witness" during troubled times, in troubled lands, that helped inspire the late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, poets Essex Hemphill and Marion Riggs, and marry other intellectuals. This Morning, This Evening, So Soon: Jomes Baldwin and the Voices of Queer Resistance, which takes part of its title from a short story Baldwin pubished in The Atlantic in 1960, is a reckoning of sorts-an homage to Black queer force as it continues to live and feed this nation's activist spirit.… July 5th 182 Dear B11l, and Evan : I am sorry to have been so derelict for so long, but I am sure, on the other hand, that you understand hard trials, great tribulations, and what else in new? Today we visited the Capital Jewish museum to see their exhibit on comic book history!
WELCOME TO THE JEWISH COMICS EXPERIENCE From the Center for Jewish History & the Capital Jewish Museum BAM! POW! WELCOME! Jewish comic creators have been instrumental in the history of the comic book, a relatively new medium that has existed for just over a century. This exhibition looks at Yiddish cartoons, the rise of the comic book superhero, Hebrew cartoons, and contemporary graphic novels in a broad sweep of the Jewish comics experience. Sometimes, the Jewishness in a comic book is obvious: when The Thing had an adult bar mitzvah, for example. But Jewishness in comics can be more subtle, discernable to those "in the know" but not readily apparent to those unfamiliar with Jewish customs, mythology, literature, and art. For example, Superman's name on Krypton, Kal-El, might invoke for some the Hebrew word for God (El), indicating his godlike powers. THIP! BANG! Newspaper comic strips, an early precursor for the comic book, first appeared in the 1890s, with Richard Outcault's The Yellow Kid (1895) being one of the most famous. The strip portrayed the lives of Irish immigrants in Manhattan. Jewish writers, artists, and publishers, some of them immigrants and some first-generation Americans, made significant contributions to the development of early comic books. The earliest comic books, for instance, were compilations of newspaper strips assembled by Jewish newsprint salesman Maxwell Ginsburg (1894-1947), who would become known as Max Gaines. The comic book superheroes created by Jews, especially in the 1930s-1960s, are legendary: Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, The Avengers, The X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and The Hulk. All of these -and so many more-had Jewish creators. Yiddish humor, identity, and Jewish threads appear throughout.
