‘Eliza escapes across the Ohio River’. Acrylic on waste plastic and baking foil.

Van Gogh was a great admirer of the anti slavery novel ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’. In a letter he described it as an “astonishingly beautiful book”.

This past month I’ve been learning about vegan style Caribbean and Afro-American food, with help from chefs such as Bryant Terry and Lloyd Rose. My Jamaican patties have come on well; I’ve got the fat content down without sacrificing taste, and even slipped some beets in!

A new painting, acrylic on 24”x36” canvas, that tells of a camping trip to Frontenac in 2025, when I met an owl, plenty of water-snake, and turtles. It’s influenced by the art of Pacita Abad, Norval Morrisseau, and general principles of Anishinaabe art.

Seals under full moon and northern lights, Iceland. Acrylic on waste plastic and tin foil. Inspired by my visit to Iceland in 2025, and the art of Dora Carrington.

Loaded dhal puri roti, from the Island Vegan cookbook by Jamaican-Canadian chef Lloyd Rose. I’ve never made a ‘stuffed crust’ roti before, I need to roll it thinner in future, but I loved the varied textures of this first try.

Resistance takes many forms.

The Afro-Vegan cookbook by Bryant Terry is a great cultural resource and learning tool that I’ve been using since Christmas. Today I made his cornbread with pecan dukkah.

Last Xmas I put a tin-can sun camera in the Upstate NY woods. It’s unsafe for me to visit the US now as I oppose child abuse, etc, so a friend just retrieved the can. The image shows the sun moving thru midday for the entire 1st year of the devil’s 2nd term.

I camped on Norah Lake in Algonquin this fall, saw a huge moose and geese flying south past a full moon, and a lonely loon called, it was all very beautiful. I remembered it all recently, so I painted this, acrylic on 16x20” canvas.

A sacred family scene; Elephants in Sri Lanka, acrylic on 5”x7” canvas, a memory from when I visited Pinnewela in 2014. I’ve really enjoyed taking part in the #ArtAdventCalendar Thanks @jayispainting.earthskyart.ca for organising!

Stonehenge and crow’, taken with a pinhole camera onto photo paper. Before I left England for good I took a 3 week long walk, sleeping rough, approaching ancient sites as they were meant to be approached. Stonehenge was one such site. Day 21 of #ArtAdventCalendar #pinhole #photography

‘These simple things are all we have left to trust…’ Natural Earth pigment paint on found birch bark. Between AI, digital art, and the DoubleTalk of journalists, politicians, and their super rich masters, it’s hard to trust. But apples, these I still have faith in. Day 19 of the #ArtAdventCalendar

A few moments from a Christmas walk; people who never have enough time to talk finally gather to discuss family issues far from prying ears, the dog is distracted by the robins among the sumac, me watching it all, sketching, detached. Day 18 of #ArtAdventCalendar

A snake I painted (acrylic on wood panel) after a long weekend involving much nature viewing and a pow wow. Nature is alive and watching, with eyes everywhere! The ‘Woodland Style’ influence is heavy in this one, I love Morrisseau’s work. Day 16 of #ArtAdventCalendar

‘Gullfoss’. Acrylic on 9”x6” canvas, inspired by a visit this year. I’m eager to return to Iceland, nature seems very prominent there. Humans are relatively few, and waterfalls drown out voices wherever we go.

Among Mum’s belongings was a photo of a misty island. I’ve no idea where she took it, somewhere in Cornwall or Wales maybe. I figured it was a special place for her, so I painted it in memory of her.
