This is how my day began today: a LOUD alert of a nearby earthquake. It was weird, because the quake was about 200 miles away and magnitude 6.9: not small, but not a danger from 200 miles away.

This afternoon, the LA Times reports that it was an error (their third in about five years).

Purple-Striped Jellyfish at Monterey Bay Aquarium. Thanks to the exhibit's lighting, this approximately 20" jelly glows warm white against an indigo background. Looking like an inverted Tiffany lampshade, it has numerous near-black purple stripes running from a ring around the top of the animal's bell to ink-blot-like shapes that resemble long-tailed bats around the rim. "Leucothea Pulchra" ("Beautiful Sea Goddess") lives up to its name. This gossamer whisp about 5 inches in length features eight parallel rows of tiny cilia that glisten like animated rainbow glitter chasing from top to bottom against the exhibit's deep azure background.

This was its 3rd attempt, and arguably the funniest.
