This was one of the movies we watched on repeat when I was a kid and VCR technology was new. For some reason the only scene which sticks in my brain was the one where Roger Moore forces a drug dealer to eat a whole bag of cocaine. Bit silly now but we loved it back then. Must give it a rewatch!

Re: Shelfies: "plots that reveal unexpected brutalities hidden in plain view". Oof - felt that one! This is why I like to avoid people as a general rule in life.

Seeing as youre a fan of Vineland I'm looking forward to your review of One Battle After Another which is a loose adaptation of it

Losing the argument? Shout Paedo!

I think the best advice is if you ever see a Sky News reporter coming towards you with a microphone + angry mob in tow then just save time and start running immediately

Relieved to hear this. All the reviews are saying the same thing. The only people I've seen coming out against it are a small cohort of angry online nerds who's lifes mission seems to be analyzing all media for any possible hint of left wing/liberal thought. Joyless fucks and not true SF fans at all

Just another soulless nut-job billionaire talking nonsense. I think the endless mental gymnastics they must have to do in order to justify the fact that despite having god-like power/resources they still choose to do absolutely nothing to help their fellow humans drives them all nuts in the end

I hope they record your panel discussions and stick em up on youtube so all those of us who cant make it can enjoy them too 👍

Is aging easier for someone in your position though?
By that I mean someone who:
1. Followed their dream
2. Turned out to be unusually good at it
3. Experienced huge success at it
You made your mark and did it by doing exactly what you wanted to. A rare combination indeed

Damn, never even heard of this. Will have to check it out. It must be a bit disheartening for the makers of these shows that tv has become so oversaturated and the audience so atomised that you can produce stone cold brilliance and no one even notices anymore

Reminds me of the Bill Murray speech in Rushmore: "Take dead aim on the rich boys, get them in the crosshairs and take them down. They can buy anything but they cant buy backbone. Dont let them forget that"

Obscure mid-list author? Nah after surmounting the Everest-like challenge of bringing a big-budget adaptation of your work to fruition that makes you a "made man" in literary terms forevermore. But even if that had never happened I'd say you still earned that status just on the strength of AC alone

I thoroughly googled that book before but could never decide if it was worth ordering. Any good?

Yikes - the 20 minutes I spent queueing up at a bookshop yesterday doesnt seem so bad now - although at the time I was pretty annoyed about it cos I'd never encountered this level of congestion in a bookshop before....

Thats brave. Hope it went well. But dont you worry about it all going wrong and you end up looking like a dummy on national tv just because of bad luck with the questions? I guess the opposite is just as true but most would be scared to take the risk of public humiliation like that so kudos to you

The "Get away from her you bitch" callback in Romulus was so LAME and ill-advised by comparison it pretty much sank the whole movie for me. Calling back to an all-time iconic moment in the middle of your decidedly mid movie just reminds everyone how much it suffers by comparison. Bad idea!

You saw it in the cinema? You lucky bastard. I wouldnt usually think that a UK audience would be that demonstrative but Aliens is a very special movie. The FX may have improved since then but narratively it has never been topped. Even Cameron himself acknowledges it as his creative/artistic peak

Admit it Richard you deliberately sabotaged your own holiday just so you could watch this in a THX cinema! I think after almost 50 years its time to admit that this is definitively the scariest creature they will ever come up with. Trying to replace it with something else in Prometheus was a mistake

Oh right - haha - your tweets keep going over my head. Either that or else in my subconscious I have identified you too much with your fictional protagonists

Bit passive-aggressive. Swearing is just how many British (and Irish) people put emphasis on certain words. As long as theres no kids around its fine. Unless of course you were grabbing guys by the collar and screaming in their face that "We're FUCKING doing it my way, got it?"

Congratulations! Looking forward to it! Coming out in about a year you think?

Nice to have an understanding fight instructor. An accidental punch on the nose sounds quite painful. By the way did you know that someone out there is making ads for you? Quite a good one too - I wanna see this as a movie now:

Hi Richard, have you heard of Jason Pargin? (Author of "John Dies At The End") He has a tiktok channel where he gives his takes on things-including the frustrations of being a successful author. Is it true that the more successful you are the more you disappoint fans?

But in the movie Damon is quite charming/charismatic so you understand why they invite him back to their villa and want to keep him around. However this new Ripley is such an awkward monosyllabic cold fish that you never really buy that they would want to get involved with him in the first place
