A thought I keep having: what if I just log off all social media and subscribe to a few paper magazines and newspapers instead

Happy Mid Autumn Festival! 🥮 I’m thrilled to share the cover of #TheGirlWithAThousandFaces, coming 5 May 2026 from @torbooks.bsky.social! ⭐⁣The Girl with a Thousand Faces is a Chinese-Gothic tale set in a historical Hong Kong.

Cover art by Lindsey Carr, Cover design by Shreya Gupta
A ghostly Chinese woman with dead white eyes stares out from a stylised black and green ocean, her face surrounded by billowing gold foam THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEW NOVEL FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE BOOK EATERS

A haunting dark urban fantasy set in a historical Hong Kong, where ancient myths and local legends combine in a story of ghosts, grief and women who will not forgive.

Mercy Chan is a triad exorcist with a mysterious past. After washing up on the shores of Hong Kong with no memory during World War II, she found a home in Kowloon Walled City, an infamous, ghost-infested slum full of lost and traumatised civilians. Since the war ended, Mercy has rebuilt her life and found work as a ghost-talker for the local triad, dealing with the angry and bitter spirits who haunt this place.

But the past she can’t remember won’t let her go. An unusually powerful ghost lurks in Kowloon’s waterways, drowning innocents and threatening the district. Unnervingly, it claims to know Mercy—and her forgotten childhood.

As Mercy is drawn into a deadly cat-and-mouse game with this malignant spirit, she begins to realise that the monster she fights within these walls may well be one of her own making.

Why not grab a copy of this multi-award-winning spy thriller to read before the sequel comes out next June?

If you're not a Kindle user, other platforms often price match.

The official community support answer is, I kid you not, 'after going to the next comment, scroll up a bit'. Yeah, sure, I'll do that 2,000-3,000 times over the course of a typical copyedit, very helpful, thanks.

Who the hell decided that when you select 'Next change or comment' in Word it should be placed at the very bottom of the screen, often slightly off the screen, instead of in the centre?

In what world does that make any sense at all?

God I hate working in Word.

I'm on the Always Take Notes podcast, talking Pagans and scriptwriting. Enjoyed this one as lot as it's quite into the process end of things as well as covering how you actually make a living and balancing writing with childcare stuff.

And, of course, all the readers, bloggers, booksellers and Instagrammers who have taken this book to heart and talked about it. I wouldn’t have got here without you.

Now, I’ve got copyedits to crack on with, so you can read the sequel!

And of course to the teams from Bloody Scotland, the Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival and my fellow shortlisters, who I was so honoured to be alongside for this amazing summer.
