From 1923-62, they never went more than four years without a World Series title. The longest drought since Ruth arrived is 18 years - 1978-96.

In 1919, things changed a little. They went 80-59 and were only 7.5 games behind the Black Sox.

In 1920, Babe Ruth arrived. They didn't win that year, but they won their first pennant in 1921. They won five more in the decade, including World Series victories in 1923, 1926 and 1927.

They had a couple good early seasons - close seconds to Boston in 1904 and Chicago in 1906 - but from 1907-18, they finished at least 11 games out of first in every season.

1908: 51-103, 39.5 GB
1912: 50-102, 55 GB
1913: 57-94, 38 GB
1914: 70-84, 30 GB
1915: 69-83, 32.5 GB

Let me tell you about the Yankees before Babe Ruth, when winning a World Series was a wild fantasy.

The current Yankees franchise started in Baltimore in 1901. After two bizarre years, the Orioles (yep) went out of business and the franchise was transferred to New York.

This is the first time in Yankees history that they have won just one World Series in a quarter-century.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

Prime time for the east coast. It's still a 5:08 game in Seattle.
davehogg.bsky.social
Yes. I was thinking Seattle was 1 because they were playing the Tigers, but they were seeded to get Cleveland.

The scheduling is still ridiculous.

I mean, ESPN tried to have the Yankees and Red Sox on Sunday Night Baseball at least 15 times a season, but Fox only seems interested in showing the American League playoffs if the Yankees are playing.

The Seattle Mariners are the top seed in the American League playoffs. Their reward is to have the last three games of the ALDS scheduled at 1 pm, noon and 1:40 pm PDT.

Javy Baez:

"I've heard boos my whole career, so I don't mind them. To me, that just shows the desire of our fans."

(how does it feel when the crowd chants his name) "I think that makes me more nervous than the boos."

The fans are no longer booing Riley Greene.
davehogg.bsky.social
The boos for Riley Greene (and the offense in general) are getting loud.

Finnegan gets a 6-4-3 double play, but Josh Naylor scores to make it 2-0. J.P. Crawford pops out and a possible season-ending disaster is limited to one run.

Holton gives up two singles and a walk. Kyle Finnegan is in with the bases loaded and no one out.

This is obviously really early for Finnegan, but this is the biggest moment of the season.

Casey Mize is done after three innings. Tyler Holton is in - we'll see if Dan Wilson flips his lineup.

385.

Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene have now struck out 384 times this season.

It has been nine years since Alfredo Simon's last major-league game.

That could have been a lot worse if Julio Rodriguez didn't swing at a first-pitch slider that was low and outside.

The rain delay was apparently so Ford Field could take part in the orange-out.

I didn't catch the name of the guy throwing out the ceremonial first pitch, but he's got a pretty good fastball.

Miguel something ... the fans seemed excited to see him

Quite possibly. I think people without cable are in bad shape here.
