This is also why I dislike the "humans with wings/elves or androids" thing you mentioned, because it feels like a cheap shortcut with no commitment to the acceptance, since the more human the 'monster' of the relationship looks, the easier it is to hide the differences...

For me it's the "acceptance" factor of it. It makes the difference easier to see and understand at a simple glance, and it's impossible to hide, so it has the potential to be really sweet and tender because, in contrast, the acceptance for each other is also impossible to hide. :)
