I'm a bit late to the party, but anyway... Old & slow PCs aren't brilliant with modern, polished Linux distros, like Ubuntu. It costs only time to try one & see if it works for you. Otherwise you'd need to try one of the more stripped down distros. Give me a shout if you need more advice on this :)
