Here's the radar at right about the time of the the EF5 damage near Enderlin, ND, from KMVX (Fargo). Intense azimuthal shear.

Given there was a massive, high-intensity QLCS bearing down on the area, I have to wonder if the QLCS had an influence on the supercell/tornado intensity at Enderlin. #NDwx

The CSSL/NTP assisted the US National Weather Service (NWS) with their upgrading of the official rating of the June 2025 Enderlin, ND tornado from EF3 to EF5.

Announced by the NWS today, it’s the first EF5-rated tornado in the US since 2013.

The first forested area to be searched with NTP's new AI tool - Northern Ontario east of Lake Superior - turned up five tornadoes, including one rated EF2. These were all manually verified and documented.

Love this - from today’s Globe and Mail.

It's been fairly quiet tornado-wise in southern Ontario and southern Quebec with only 10 weak (EF0-EF1) tornadoes so far. But there have been numerous severe storms in the more northern parts of these provinces. There are likely to be more tornadoes confirmed there in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

I parked on the @westernu.ca campus and was walking toward my building when I heard a bird that stopped me in my tracks. There were two bald eagles in a dead tree at the edge of the Thames River not 50 m away. One flew away but I got a quick pic of the other one. Amazing nature in the city! #LdnOnt

Just watched the great new doc on Sarah McLachlan’s #LilithFair. I regret not going - I loved all the artists that played. I think I just misunderstood it at the time.

But overall, given the cultural moment we are in now, it really just seems like it happened on another planet. How sad is that?

New paper alert!

"Multi-Level In-Situ Measurements During a Direct Hit by a Significant Tornado" in A-O.

Observations from a 2010 F2 tornado at a Harrow, ON-area wind farm show that peak winds do increase closer to the ground, supporting DOW radar measurements/analysis.

BTW, the work of finding unreported 2025 tornadoes isn't over. The NTP is using a new experimental AI tool to automatically search satellite images for tornado scars in Canadian forests - tedious work that usually takes staff weeks to do manually. It's already found quite a few. More on this soon!

With the 10 tornadoes added today from past months, the 2025 national tornado count goes to 66. Which is tied for 2017 at this point in the season for the *least* number of tornadoes since NTP began in 2017. And is almost half of what Canada experienced last year.

Will be looking into the why...

I'll be surprised if these two supercells southeast of Val D'Or, QC are not producing tornadoes. Moving northeast, about to cross Hwy 117. These are severe warned but not tornado warned, so you won't see an alert on your cell phone. But probably a good idea to take shelter if in the area. #meteoQC
