I am 100% in favor of the Far from Over reference. The fact that any part of that song is still in my brain should serve as proof that I grew up in Philadelphia.

I may know some of the people responsible for that.

And they sure as heck weren't one and done.

Here's Where the Story Ends. I Feel. Their cover of Wild Horses.

Reading, Writing & Arithmetic is one of those albums where they somehow took a very specific mood of my teenage years and encoded it onto a CD.

Yeah. In the end it’s the same storytelling device as the one dramatic speech that rallies everyone or the one shocking revelation that utterly collapses the bad guy’s support. If the rest of the story is good enough for me to buy in, great. If not, it’ll be one more thing that rankles.

It’s absolutely speedrun and the time it takes to do things or not do things is one thing I could quibble with in the movie but in the end I just chalk it up to the abstraction that is movie storytelling. FF had a similar speedrun this year. And of course there’s every trial put on film.

I haven’t watched a ton of Smallville, but I have watched a lot of seasons 9 and 10 and now my daughter is doing the same. (My Adventures with Superman and the 2025 movie were her gateway.) Still haven’t totally worked out how living Jor El and computer Jor El are connected.

Sorry, man. I'm sorry that as a country we put you in this situation, and I hope we're successful at making a better world so it doesn't keep doing this.

What will poor Eric Adams do for work?
That’s nbody’s business but the Turks!

He had such a hold on the universe that he could mine its details for comedy and drama in equal measure.

Helps that he was a fantastic writer, of course.

Appreciate your efforts to maintain the city’s morale.

Flailing like a frog introducing a variety show on your behalf.

I read William Goldman’s chapter on this in Adventures in the Screen Trade before I saw it, which probably wasn’t the ideal way to do it. Was it the Post that did a deep dive a few years ago into the evolution of the screenplay through all the different revisions?

I gave my heart and soul to that place. Built entire sections for journalists pushed out of their home countries.

When the writer I hired, Jamal Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi Arabia, they paraded me around as a symbol for press freedom.

I put MY LIFE on the line to defend journalism and WaPo.

weird that neither of these articles two main stories decrying censorship mention WaPo's firing of @karenattiah.bsky.social I guess democracy really does die in darkness

Some of the college scenes for Quiz Show were filmed at Fordham University while I was a student there. I'm assuming they did it over the summer, but I don't remember for sure. I saw the movie when they played it in the auditorium/lecture hall of one of the buildings where they filmed.

Hey Philly--

I'm going to be on Studio 2 on @whyy.org from 1-2pm this afternoon talking about political violence in American history.

Tune in if you can!

But as someone placed on his Professor Watch List—who received torrents of vitriol from his followers—I find it jarring to read tributes claiming he was “doing politics the right way.”

Only a white man untouched by his organization’s targeting could believe such a thing.

This is why we need complicated algorithms to make music recommendations. How else would we figure out that these three artists are similar?
A screenshot from my Apple Music page recommending the "Crowded House & Similar Artists" Station. The artists identified as similar to Crowded House (Neil Finn's current band) are Neil Finn and Split Enz (Neil Finn's previous band). Neil Finn is featured prominently in all three images. Guess there wasn't room for Fleetwood Mac.

I always enjoy reading the newsletter; the subhead shout out to Matthew Sweet was a nice bonus this week.

condemnations of political violence are well taken but it does feel as if some
prominent political commentators are of the view that violence isn’t a part of the history of American politics and that is very much not true.

This ad has been in the trailers almost every time I have gone to the movies this summer and it is a miracle I have not been thrown out for shouting this at everyone in the theater.

This ad about how great Google Gemini is ends by telling us how Ted, the protagonist and a big James Blunt fan, “found something he didn’t even know he was looking for” at a James Blunt concert where James Blunt is playing not “High” by James Blunt but “She’s So High” by Tal Bachman.

Yeah, I'm trying to extrapolate a bit. The saying is that persuading a voter to switch is worth the effort because it's a 2-vote swing. But what I'm getting from you is that there are far fewer switchers than voter/non-voter pairs moving in opposite directions.
davethomer.bsky.social
If I’m following you right, then rather than look for one Trump/Biden, it would be more productive to look for a Nonvoter/Biden and a Trump/Nonvoter. Does that sound right?
