so maybe consider that when deciding on what chat replacement to use. One company that controls the whole network is putting all your eggs in one basket, and it's one basket that everyone is going to concentrate on influencing.

I'm not saying "we should all go back to IRC!" or anything, but just that having things be run by many small unconnected operators made it inherently a lot harder for governments to control.
