I don't have a picture of me explaining interviews, flyouts and offers, but here is the team from the ECB informing candidates about job opportunities in central banking.

I think nobody in their right mind would want to claim that any sort of legal system is immune to an erosion following sustained and permanent efforts to do so.

All those countries needed considerably more time to have their institutions and legal system destabilized. Trump is in power for a few months only.

I was recently in a conversation with a law professor. He said that what he found most astonishing was how fragile American institutions are and how laws and legal standards do not seem to be binding. He said that he would find this unimaginable in any jurisdiction using civil law.

Article I Sections 9 & 10 of the U.S. Constitution—which limit presidential power over tariffs and protect habeas corpus—have disappeared from Congress’s website. They claim a coding error is to blame.
Sections of the U.S. Constitution Missing from Government Website
Articles I, Sections 9 and 10 are inaccessible on Congress-run portal, raising concerns over transparency and public access.

I fully agree. Part of this is making clear to our students that research careers are not the only path to a fulfilled professional life. Something this profession has generally failed at in the past...

America is built on optimism.

To some extent they can but probably not for all of their students. Plus, if they have rational expectations, they know this won't be fixed within a year and next year with 2x as many candidates will be even more disastrous.

I would not recommend any student to defer by one year.
david-schindler.de
I don't expect the next years to be better. All PhD economists should prepare that not everyone who loves doing research will get the opportunity to do so. Getting your expectations right can avoid disappointment in such a stressful time.

Good luck to everyone on the market!

Overall, I think job market candidates should expect difficulties finding a job. While the econ job market should stay their primary focus, I would definitely recommend to follow other channels through which relevant jobs are posted. It will be important to all sorts of employment.

Universities in the United Kingdom face financial difficulties and Dutch universities are still railing from their far-right government's assault earlier this year. Universities in other parts of Europe are also suffering from reduced funding.
david-schindler.de
This will exert downward pressure and some European departments are already eager to scoop up talent that would normally have landed a top job in the US.

But this bears bad news for European job market candidates, especially because European job postings are expected to be low.
david-schindler.de
Top US departments will likely hold off hiring because they have reduced funding due to cuts in federal grants. But even if they don't, there is big uncertainty that will warrant caution at many places.

But even if not hiring, these depts will continue to put out students that want to find a job.
david-schindler.de
First, Trump's assault on universities will mean that very few top US departments will be hiring. Even before attacking Harvard on intl student visas, they were preparing for a 20% budget cuts.
