Chorley Titanic Officer

On March 30th, 1874, Charles Herbert Lightoller was born in Chorley, Lancashire. His mother died shortly after he was born, and his father abandoned him and went to New Zealand. At 13, Lightoller began a 4 year seafaring apprenticeship - cont'd.

Lightoller began a 4 year seafaring apprenticeship aboard the Primrose Hill. He would travel on many sailing ships until he got his mate’s ticket at 21 and left for steamships. He then got his master’s certificate, and began his career with the White Star Line in 1900, the 4th officer of the Medic.

He was to be the first officer of the Titanic, only to be demoted to second when Henry Wilde was brought in as chief officer. On the night of the sinking, he was in his bunk. As soon as the ship’s fate was made clear, he began to assist the evacuation of passengers on the port side.

He was much stricter about “women and children first”, making it almost “women and children only.” In the Titanic’s final minutes, Lightoller dived off the side of the ship, eventually making his way to overturned Collapsible B that night. He was the last survivor to board the Carpathia.

Lightoller also wrote his own autobiography, entitled Titanic and Other Ships during this time although it was pulled from the shelves after the Marconi Company threatened a lawsuit due to a comment in the book about the Titanic disaster and the role of the Marconi operators during it.
