This is great Andrew - I've been trying to do something at this level for my first year lings students in class, mainly to underpin later discussion of linguistics issues (and ethical ones) and found it quite a challenge, so this is really just so perfect, and very much needed. Thank you!

oh that's disappointing. I quite enjoyed some of his early books (the fencing one and the chess one especially)

looking at the summary on the website I agree wholeheartedly with Potochnik's idea that science is after understanding rather than truth (though I've always though of it in terms of insight). You've made me buy yet another book, Aniello!

I didn't know about this book. looks great. In my many years debating with the usage-based guys I've always thought that the issue boiled down to comfort both with different levels of idealization (basically competence/performance) and with abstraction as a mode of explanation (basically autonomy)
