I do so enjoy living on the coast. It is such a fertile ground for capturing images when I'm out and about with my camera. Seaburn promenade, Sunderland in North East England on an overcast October day and still feeling pleasant at 19°C.

No season of mists and mellow fruitfulness just yet – feeling almost summer-like on Sunderland's coast in North East England. My local seafront, taking in Roker Pier and Lighthouse at the mouth of the River.

A view of my local seafront at Roker, Sunderland in North East England. The vista includes Roker Pier and Lighthouse at the mouth of the River Wear and entrance to the Port of Sunderland.
The only giveaway that this is not high summer is the much lower altitude of the sun now that we are a good couple of weeks past the autumnal equinox.

It 'was' such an enigmatic building Peter – such a shame that the landholder decided it needed to be demolished!
davidallanphoto.bsky.social
The first time I visited this place I walked from Baybridge, near Blanchland and I reckoned it was around 5km - 6km, so at least a 10km round trip. Sadly, the landholder had it demolished quite recently and it's now just a pile of rubble!

View from an abandoned building, looking out across south Northumberland in North East England. As a Victorian shooting lodge, the Duchess of Connaught is said to have visited and maybe she too once gazed out and enjoyed this same view.

A view from a window in a long-abandoned farmstead in a remote spot on the southern fringes of Northumberland in North East England. Once used as a Victorian shooting lodge, the Duchess of Connaught is said to have been a visitor and may well have gazed out across the valley of the Beldon Burn.

Opening night this evening of Houghton Feast, an ancient festival, held in Houghton-le-Spring in North East England, it's roots stretching back 800 years. Hopefully 'Storm Amy' calms enough for tomorrow's Feast Carnival Parade, led by Houghton Pipe Band.

On the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, a photograph I took in the chapel on St Michael's Mount, near Penzance in West Cornwall. This bronze sculpture of St Michael, defeating Lucifer, was sculpted by Lyn Constable Maxwell in 1989.

The early autumnal sun setting on Sunderland's Mowbray Park, one of the oldest municipal parks in North East England. This view includes an updated version of the original Winter Gardens, built as part of restoration project completed in 2000.

The view captured here looks across the park's pond, framed on the right by the Winter Gardens, built as part of restoration work to restore this public amenity to its Victorian glory.
Funded by a generous £3.3 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the park and new Winter Gardens officially re-opened in 2000.

The City of Durham's crowning jewel in North East England is undoubtedly its superb cathedral, soaring above the banks of the River Wear. The Grade I listed building forms part of the Durham Castle and Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When the sun is still shining, a visit to the seaside beckons – luckily in Sunderland, North East England, we have a seaside right on our doorstep. Feeling very pleasant indeed this afternoon at the Cat & Dog Steps beach on our local coastline.

Into the final week of September and the sun is still shining and bringing warmth to my local coastline. This is a view looking down the 'Cat & Dog Steps' at Roker, Sunderland in North East England, a wide expanse of fine sand under blue skies and sunshine.

The view from Sunderland's Noble's Quay on the banks of the River Wear in North East England and the first sunset of autumn.
Love how at the spring and autumnal equinox the sun sets behind Wearmouth Bridge from this viewpoint.

Thankyou so much for your kind comment, although I can't take credit for the lighting (that's all down to Mother Nature).

The UK is predicted to see some particularly stunning colours this autumn thanks in part to a prolonged spell of dry summer weather. The equinox occurs today (22 September) at 19:19 BST in the UK.

On the last but one final full day of summer, it rained, then it rained and it rained some more! Remembering the season at its best with this landscape on the South West Coastal Path near Rinsey Head in Cornwall, not far from Helston.

A coastal landscape captured along a stretch of the South West Coastal Path near Rinsey Head, not far from Helston in Cornwall. The original is in colour, but I thought it translated rather well as a monochrome rendition.

As the autumnal equinox approaches, remembering the height of the season on an idyllic summer's day back in July in West Cornwall. A capture from a wander around the extremely picturesque fishing village of Mousehole, home of 'Mowzer'!

I understand, that when this installation by Sean Henry, called 'Couple', was unveiled at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on the Northumberland Coast of North East England, it was the very first first permanent offshore sculpture in the UK.

A coastal sculpture of two figures by Sean Henry and called 'Couple', stand at around at 5 metres high and gazing out to sea as a small fishing boat passes by. The bronze and steel sculpture was installed in 2007 on the town's breakwater and was said to be the very first first permanent offshore sculpture in the UK.

The sun still shining today across the Blue Flag Awarded coastline at Seaburn in North East England. Definitely one of the jewels in the crown of the City of Sunderland, its fine sandy beaches were looking inviting today at low tide.

This abandoned farmstead, stands in splendid isolation on the high windswept moors west of Edmundbyers in Co Durham, North East England. Fascinating to think about the logistics of living in such a place, especially in the harsher conditions of winter.
