Maybe it was to pay informants off for a drug bust. I don’t know if she was in costume though.

You didn’t live in the Canal Zone. The Canal Zone went away on October 1, 1979. You lived in the former Canal Zone. I was born in Coco Solo hospital in 1966.

Exactly. Not worth the risk of invading Panama, losing the life of US and Panamanians. Even is you take the average cost of a ship to transit the canal which is $350K x 40 (avg navy ships per yr). It’s only $14M. Most navy ships are smaller. So it’s less than that.
February 7, 2025 at 2:03 PM
Nope. The US Navy has always paid a toll to transit the canal.
February 7, 2025 at 10:49 AM
You have to pay the toll prior to transiting the canal. Or you don’t go through.
February 7, 2025 at 10:47 AM
That’s not true. ALL ships pay a toll to transit the canal. Even US Navy ships. They always have. I was born in the Canal Zone.
February 7, 2025 at 10:45 AM
For real!
February 7, 2025 at 10:41 AM
I just talked to my friend who calculates the tolls for ships transiting the canal. He said that US Navy ship have always paid a toll to transit the canal. I was born in the Canal Zone, so I still have friends who work on the canal.
February 7, 2025 at 10:39 AM
No they get charged to transit the canal.
February 7, 2025 at 2:20 AM
Yup that’s only $3-$4 million in tolls annually. So we’re not talking a lot of money.
February 7, 2025 at 1:22 AM
The average ship going through the canal is about $350,000. The record toll was an LNG tanker which was just over $4 million. That was due to priority bookings due to the draught in 2023.

Gatun Lake is at capacity currently. They are in the process of creating another man made lake, which should be available in 5 years.
February 7, 2025 at 1:16 AM
The Canal Authority has published rates on their website. Tolls through the canal are based on size of ship and type of cargo. All countries are charged the same fees. The average toll currently is about $341,000 per ship.

The US has 178 flagged ships. The free that Macro was referring to was US warships, which average about 38 a year. Apparently Marco lied.
February 7, 2025 at 1:08 AM
That is not true with the new locks. The only ships that are too big are aircraft carriers.

February 7, 2025 at 1:00 AM
The only ships that are too large for the Panama Canal are aircraft carriers. With the new locks any other naval ship can transit the canal.
February 7, 2025 at 12:58 AM
That email lady said it too.
February 4, 2025 at 1:35 AM
China did not build or pay for the new locks. It was built by a European company.
February 3, 2025 at 5:09 AM
There won’t be massive casualties. Panama no longer has an army. It was disbanded after the invasion.
