I’m not sure I could bear the disappointment if my hopes are dashed.

I already disliked flagpoles before this polyester plague occurred.
There were only 2 (preexisting) garden flagpoles in our Devon village but no graffiti or other jingoistic garbage has appeared. We are not polarised. It’s a kindly, old fashioned community.
I’d hate to live in Flagville!

I sometimes wonder what effect it would have if, at press conferences or in interviews, people started subtly sniffing and twitching nostrils or coughing into handkerchiefs. I think the message would get through and it could be devastating.
