Venturing over here for a look. To quote myself, “I told the people of my district that I would serve them as faithfully as I had done; but if not, they might go to hell, and I would go to The Other Site.”

As always, the fact eight years of Clintonomics made a meaningful change in this graph and a decade plus of going with Bernie-Warren-Bidenomics has made Democratic performance worse makes zero difference in the eyes of the Chris Hayes of the world about their relative popularity with voters

The thing about the song that’s hilarious in Internet Discourse is it’s essentially Boomers complaining life isn’t as good as the Greatest Generation folks had it, because generational gripes are perpetual and cyclical

The thing to remember about Allentown is Billy Joel released it in the early 2000s after China was admitted to the WTO, several years after he’d allegedly quit making popular music

We literally just had a Presidency fail because of expensive consumer goods and the current President is also unpopular due to expensive consumer goods but trust the Ivy Leaguer turned cable TV news host that Globalization Is Bad For You Because Neoliberalism.
chrislhayes.bsky.social
Basically this was the entire logic fo neoliberalism and globalization - yes lots of job destruction, but prices falling on all kinds of goods and new jobs in new areas. It was taken as gospel that all of it was a net benefit, but that's a bit harder argument to make these days.

Having listened to more of it, feeling like her artistry is at the same neurotic “If we’re not the biggest band on the planet what are we?” state U2 was at post-2000

I know this is an extremely FT skeet, but I think it’s true: the most interesting way to analyse Taylor Swift is that she is the most successful female entrepreneur in the history of the world.

JFK was six years younger than Ronald Reagan and only seven years older than George Bush and Jimmy Carter; even with his health issues it was plausible but for Oswald he lives to the Obama era like his surviving brother did

another strange thing is to consider how long people *could* have lived. Anne Frank was three years younger than Queen Elizabeth II!

The important thing to remember is that a 2-0 deficit in Division Series have been overcome much more often than 3-0 deficits in other series

It’s forgotten now but when the Nats were making their rise from the cellar to be the NL East Team of the 10s, their big rival was the tail end of that elite Phillies run, with the Werth signing and also the team finally chasing away traveling Phillies fans away from the ballpark being big deals

“You Jinx my Rival!” “No, you Jinx my rival!”
davidcrockett08.bsky.social
My current Series plan is rooting for the AL team unless it’s the Yankees and rooting against the NL team unless it’s the Brewers. All the long drought teams first.

The real hot take is his death helped the legacy of his band and his bandmates by permanently foreclosing any depressing cash grab reunion tours

Lennon is weird because he dies right when he’s coming back to making music but the music he’s making is content middle aged dad rock of real quality (more listenable than most of his earlier solo career), so a Lennon who lives probably has a better musical legacy but a less political one

Yeah, it’s wild to think that his famous “Comeback Special” happened when he was…33.

Nah, the airborne fought in Torch, Sicily, and Italy prior to D-Day, with the 82nd being involved in the latter two before being withdrawn to prepare for D-Day.

Honestly hilarious this website belatedly discovered a politician is very popular with actual voters and is now full of people equating that performance with a politician whose popularity is mediocre with actual voters but beloved with people on this website, saying both are equally good models.

But because the people who wrote there were and are in the Online Politics Media Club, the kinds of people who start things like The Argument don’t want to actually criticize them directly so it all becomes these elliptical arguments past each other because we’re all one big happy networking horde

But we did have a magazine that was driving Democrats Power Broker discourse the last four years, it just happened it was the American Prospect, it was full of paleoleftists who thought Obama a failure, and it helped drive the Biden Administration off a cliff.

In general the issue across all left and center left publications is to get in the door you essentially have to be Super Online and being Super Online means you end up prioritizing centering a narrow clique of socially dysfunctional people more than having a coherent vision of your publication
davidcrockett08.bsky.social
Part of the problem is there used to be magazines like that (The New Republic being the classic example) but those publications barely made money to start with and like all print media got hurt by the internet and as their prestige died they got captured by generic online hard left media cliques
stephenkb.bsky.social
My feeling from the outside is that a lot of US centre-left pundits want to be writing for a magazine that is explicitly for Democratic power-brokers, something which most political parties in most of the democratic world actually has, but they're just trying to reverse-engineer it in a weird way.

It is genuinely astounding how the last ten months have not changed progressive “The Republicans don’t have an affirmative agenda! It’s only tax cuts and judges! The filibuster only hurts Democrats!” conventional wisdom one fucking iota.
nutedawn.bsky.social
There is a totally reasonable argument that this is the case but let’s note that if you are frustrated Democrats haven’t been able to block more Trump stuff, abolishing the filibuster will make this a thousand times worse; the admin will be able to do a *lot* more. There is a trade off here

Probably not going four for four though

Typical Episode:

Data: The asteroid is going to destroy this primitive alien civilization on a nearby moon.
Picard: Should we stop it?
Riker: Cosmic Plan says Moon Go Boom Boom.
Picard: No, that would be wrong. But Prime Directive. To the conference room!
Picard: Save the moon? *sigh*Save the moon.
