But it is important to note that it would be an entirely Catholic thing for Vance to have said: "I love my wife exactly the way she is and with the convictions that she has. I deeply respect those convictions and recognize God's loving mystery in her life as in mine."

JD Vance thinks what he does about what he would like his wife to become. I'm not sure it's generally speaking such a good idea to judge what a husband or wife thinks about such matters: Marriage is a very delicate and complex matter.

How different it would sound if the news report instead read something like: " he is one of the most visible of a generation of political leaders educated at colleges where students could study aspects of Western history that in previous decades were rarely included in course offerings."
