Received just in time for #CDFriday: Saint Etienne’s (last ever?) CD single, a Bobbie Gentry Best of… (curated by SE’s Bob Stanley), a lost Kirsty MacColl single and a Joy Zipper promo.
The SE single came with a signed Xmas card 🎄🎄

David Bowie - Lady Grinning Soul

Picking a highlight from 70s Bowie is basically impossible, so I thought I’d go with a less obvious track, this fever dream of a song that closes Aladdin Sane. Don’t trust people who don’t like Bowie.

America - A Horse With No Name

In general, I’m indifferent to Soft Rock, but this song (and the genius bit where it goes lalalalalala) is one of my favourites from the 70s. I’ve known it all my life and I still love playing it.

Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

A classy performance from Roberta and a lesson in vocal restraint. She truly is one of the greats and I hope she knew how much she was (and still is) loved. Simply outstanding.

Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe

I know very little about Bobbie (I know, shameful), but I’ve spent the past hour listening to this and now I am completely hooked.
Currently planning to buy her entire discography.

30 - Low - Just Like Christmas

Released at the very end of the 90s, this gorgeous EP has become a seasonal staple at Castle Davide. The first track with its Spector-esque sound and Mimi’s forlorn vocals may well be my favourite Christmas song of all time.

51 albums in this week’s top 100 have been in the charts for more than 100 weeks, with a good proportion of those with 2/300+ weeks. How are new artist supposed to make a breakthrough if the OCC doesn’t change its rules? Also, it’s so fucking boring.

29 - Tricky - Ponderosa

One of the many highlights from Maxinquaye, which I played to death in 1995. They really knew how to make paranoia and claustrophobia sound cool and they sold a ton of records, which was great to see at the time.

1 - I Wouldn’t Normally Do This Kind of Thing

The Beatmasters did the impossible thing of improving a PSB song: it’s the most joyous thing you’ll hear today.

2 - Can You Forgive Her?

An odd choice for a first single, but with time it became another classic in the canon. Released in my disco bunny era and I was obsessed with the remixes, especially the MK ones which I played to death.

28 - The Sundays - My Finest Hour

So pleased to see them getting so many mentions in the challenge. Their debut, kicking off the 90s in grand style, is as perfect a guitar-pop LP as you’re ever likely to hear from this or any other decade.

3 - The Theatre

Another epic mini-symphony: this is about homelessness, a topic explored thoughtfully as we’d come to expect from the Boys who never trivialise issues in order to sell records.
National treasures, they are.

The wonderful Stereolab were another 90s staple: prolific, endlessly inventive, seemingly indifferent to commercial success, but with the ability to weave lovely melodies into their songs.

26 - Saint Etienne - You’re in a Bad Way

Saint Etienne (and Björk) saved the 90s for me: there was so much crap in the charts and on the radio and don’t get me started on Britpop but they released one perfect record after another.
A wonder.

5 - A Different Point of View

Another day, another sad banger. I think Very is the album where they really perfected their multi-layered wall of synths vs. melancholic vocals and it literally sounds like a greatest hits.

This was my first Pulp, I remember taking home the 12” and playing it straightaway, then again, and again and soon I was hooked.

Love me a PSB sad banger, it really felt like they could write them in their sleep. Any other band would have released this as a single, but they didn’t need to... that key change at the end ❤️❤️💔

Without wanting to diminish Geoff and Adrian’s genius beats, for me it’s Beth’s electrifying presence that makes Portishead a band without peers. I can think of no other band in the genre that matches their alchemy.

23 - Pet Shop Boys - Being Boring

The fact that this song, their masterpiece, barely scraped the top 20 in the UK interrupting a string of top 10 hits remains one of pop’s great mysteries. Everyone loves it now, but the fact still baffles.
