My guiding political philosophy my entire adult life: it's Reagan's fault. (His election in 1980 was the first time I was old enough to vote. I remember looking at his name on the ballot in the voting booth and having a visceral fear response. I was apparently an astute 20-year-old.)

now I'm recalling a music class my middle child took years ago in which the prof raised the stereotypes about hip hop and urban violence, to which my kid responded "what about old time murder ballads and rural violence"?
