The fact that even the most recent #CONSORT reporting guideline still uses grandad’s self designed MS Word flow diagram as official template is beyond me.

…but means for editors that one inevitably ends up with manuscripts one barely understands- making finding reviewers even harder than normal. I try to pre-select carefully what I handle, but suspect this partially explains your observation of mixed quality.

Well observed! As one of their editors, I rarely use the automated reviewer suggestions as I found them not useful.
Still, methods are such a broad field and BMC MRM does not triage based on suspected impact - ie they also send out quite niche stuff for review. That’s great about the journal…
