In any negotiation, your progress depends upon it.

Leverage is whatever you can use to make the other party more motivated to agree.

When leverage is scarce, try seeing the deal through the other party’s eyes — and understanding what they value beyond the contract award itself.

One of the most effective negotiation techniques I’ve seen over the years is also one of the simplest: Silence.

Try it.

Make a clear, reasonable ask — then stop talking.

People dislike silence.

They often fill it by making a concession.
