How will Austria position itself on the 2040 target? Can we count on Austria to clearly commit to its international obligations?

The fact that this is happening in the same year France (rightly!) celebrates the diplomatic success of the Paris Agreement is full of irony.

All countries should be guided by the spirit of Paris today. And set climate targets that follow the science – not lobby interests.

But countries like France (behind closed doors), and Hungary and Poland (openly), are now saying: let’s postpone the 2040 target and just define the 2035 target separately. In plain terms: less ambition, less effort during these crucial coming years that decide global warming for decades to come.

Here’s the situation: by the end of September, the EU must submit a 2035 climate target as part of the international UNFCCC process. Logically, that target should sit somewhere between the 2030 and 2040 targets.

If we want to stay even remotely compatible with the greenhouse gas budget for Paris, the EU needs to reach climate neutrality by 2050 and reduce emissions by 90–95% by 2040. That’s what the EU’s scientific advisory board has repeatedly stated.
