The Mothman Prophecies (4 stars) Speak No Evil (2022) (4.5 stars) Chopping Mall (3 stars) Hell House, LLC: Origins (3.5 stars) A review of The Mothman Prophecies: There's a ubiquitous liminal cinematic space that exists between the analog and the digital in movies from this era. It's hard for me to properly describe; like the entire vibe of the movie rests on the tip of your tongue. To me, they are so dialed into this new millennium grief that it feels like watching a memory-or a nightmare. And I think the fact that I watched this on a DVD copy that I found at a second-hand store added to the ambience. There's an oppressive weight to this movie, and I think it's severely underrated-much like Pellinger's other major movie, Arlington Road (one of my all-timers). We walk with the characters through grief and mystery. And it proves that sometimes, in monster movies, ambiguity is better. You don't need to see the mothman because eyewitness accounts and disembodied voices help you paint a picture of how horrifying it is in your head, like looking into a too-dark corner. Sometimes, your own imagination becomes your own worst enemy. A perfect movie to watch on a cloudy morning when the cats wake you up too early.
