Don’t be naive. Labour put out the idea for compulsory ID cards to make themselves look tough on immigration. That’s why they briefed the press and why the press reported it. Cue outrage and the subsequent u-turn. And all it does is piss people off.

This isn’t down to Mousinho, more to poor recruitment over the summer, injuries to key players this season and a bewildering loss of some players’ form (even Murphy was pretty awful last night).

It’s not bizarre, it’s just cheap. Any other measures would cost money.

Except it’s not necessarily an indicator of prejudice. It might simply be a statement of the current law or even, perhaps, a comment on its ridiculousness.
